Andy’s 55th Season
The Summer of Adaptation
To our community,
To make theater is to adapt. For centuries, storytellers have turned to theater as a response to the world around them, to process change, to see what old bones will stay and what new muscles will grow and stretch from within the fresh space. In the same way theater is the art of passing a story, over and over, experimenting with the way in which it’s presented and how it’s staged and why. We have popularized adaptation so deeply that it’s all around us — a sample of an older song worked into a new pop hit, a reimagining of a classic fairytale from the perspective of a different character, a retelling of a classic story in a brand new location. To adapt our stories is to give ourselves new perspective. And how incredible is it that we crave new perspectives? What a gift.
For all those reasons and more, we are challenging ourselves, as new Co-Artistic Directors adapting (see what we did there) to our new positions, to weave the concept of adaptation into every aspect of our programming for this 55th Summer Season: our shows, our writing, even our set build! To pay homage to what has come before us, and to give ourselves grace to embrace new perspectives. We are over the moon to spend the summer adapting with you.
Much appreciated,
Jess & SMJ

We couldn’t have been more thrilled with the response to our relaunch of the John C Russell Playwriting Lab last summer, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring it back again for Summer 2025. The lab will begin this year with a week-long writing workshop with a Playwright in Residence. After the workshop, playwrights are encouraged to submit a play for consideration for the 2025 John C Russell Playwriting Festival, which will be held on August 12th. You do NOT have to be a part of the Playwriting Lab to submit for the Festival. All Andy’s Kids are eligible to submit.
The Greenhouse Initiative encourages professional artists and Andy’s Kids to experiment with devising, scene readings, workshops of movement ideas, and open work sessions so that Andy’s Kids may be exposed to the process of brainstorming for the stage. The Greenhouse Initiative also operates as a development program where an invited artist/group of artists hold residency to create a new piece of work to be considered for a future season at Andy’s. A project in The Greenhouse culminates into a public reading of a full script or a workshop performance.
If you are interested in participating in an Greenhouse Initiative project, you must be available for rehearsals & all performance dates.

Apprentices work with professional artists to explore lighting design, sound, set construction, props creation and management, stage management, and more. Apprentices will report to our Technical Director, where they will help bring our mainstage productions to life while engaging in technical workshop opportunities. We ask that our apprentices be available for the performance dates associated with the shows they’d like to work on. We will check in with your young artist’s availability as the summer season approaches.
